Miami City at dusk, with Miami River in foreground

A simmering, sultry melting pot, a place to see and be seen.

It used to be called 'God's Waiting Room' because of the many octogenarians eking out their last moments by the pool. Today the old folks mingle with fashion designers, bikini models and Cuban émigrés, and the city that once had the highest murder rate in the US attracts millions of tourists.

Greater Miami is a melting pot that would make America's founders swell with pride. Over half the population is Latino, giving the city an international outlook that feels rare in the USA. For the casual visitor this means a city spiced with Latin American food, language, music, politics and spirit.

Miami, Florida's most populated city, sits at the southeastern tip of the most southeastern state of the United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the neighboring states of Alabama and Georgia to the north.

Two things divide Miami: water and income. Canals, lakes, bays and bank accounts are the geographic, spatial and social boundaries of this city. Of course, the great water that divides here is Biscayne Bay (locals call it the Billion Dollar Sandbar), holding apart the mainland city of Miami from its preening sibling, Miami Beach, on a thin barrier island about 6km (4mi) to its east. Never forget (many tourists do) that Miami Beach is not Miami's beach, but its own distinct town.

On the mainland, the street numbering system is based on north-south and east-west dividers. In Miami Beach, streets also run east-west and avenues north-south. South Beach (SoBe) is the heart of the action and runs from 5th St up to 21st St.
