The Capital of the World? Take a bite and see.
They don't come any bigger than New York, the city that never sleeps. Sure, this megatropolis has its share of the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses, but it also has world-class museums, big statues, even bigger buildings, outrageous excess and more sights, restaurants and shops than you could see in a lifetime, let alone one trip.
New York is a densely packed mass of humanity and all this living on top of one another makes the New Yorker a special kind of person. It's hard to put a finger on what makes the place buzz so hard, but the city's hyperactive rush keeps drawing more and more people to it.
New York City lies near the mouth of the Hudson River, which is linked to the Atlantic Ocean through the Verrazano Narrows. Its entire metropolitan area sprawls east into the neighboring state of Connecticut and is linked to urban areas of New Jersey, across the Hudson. That whole area, known as the 'tri-state area,' is home to more than 18 million people.
The City of New York proper comprises five boroughs. Manhattan is a densely packed island. It's the heart of New York City and the epicenter of its attractions. Brooklyn would be the fourth-largest city in the USA if it were independent of New York, and is a quilt of diverse neighborhoods. It's generally considered by hipsters and families alike to be more livable than Manhattan. The largest borough is Queens, which is home to a dizzying array of ethnic communities and both of the city's airports. The Bronx, which is half inner city, half suburbia, is also home to the New York Yankees. Staten Island is a suburban appendage with an inferiority complex.
For those looking to do obscure exploring, especially in the city's outer boroughs, get your hands on a five-borough street atlas, like the one from Hagstrom available in bookstores for around 19.00.
